For the knots a roller passes straight over

A roller covers big muscles well. It is much worse at single points — a dense knot, a spot under the shoulder blade, the attachment at the edge of a hip. The Beastie exists for those.

Its high-profile bumps are uniformly spaced and precisely engineered for how much they flex, so pressure stays concentrated where you put it instead of spreading out across the whole contact area.

      Better than a lacrosse ball

Plenty of people reach for a tennis ball or a lacrosse ball. Neither was designed for this. A smooth ball skids off the spot you are aiming at; the Beastie's texture grips, so the pressure stays put. Each one ships with a detachable base that holds the ball still, so you can work a point rather than chase it.

      Which firmness?

It depends less on how tough you are than on how you plan to use it. On the floor, with your full body weight behind it, most people want the Original. Against a wall or seated in a chair you are applying far less force, and the Xtra Firm — roughly as hard as a lacrosse ball — usually feels better. Not sure, or buying for two people? Take one of each.

Works where a roller cannot go

A Beastie fits in a bag, a desk drawer or a glove compartment. If getting down to the floor is difficult, or you are somewhere that foam rolling would be odd, it works just as well against a wall or in a chair.

      Made in the USA.
